What Is AI Optimization?

March 20, 2026 · Product AIO

For two decades, businesses optimized for Google. The goal was simple: rank higher in search results, get more clicks, sell more products. SEO became a massive industry built around keywords, backlinks, and page speed. But something fundamental has shifted.

People are no longer just searching — they're asking. Instead of typing "best running shoes" into Google and scrolling through ten blue links, they're asking ChatGPT, Gemini, or Perplexity: "What running shoe should I buy for flat feet?" And the AI gives them a direct answer. One answer. Maybe two. Not a page of options.

AI optimization — or AIO — is the practice of making your product the one that AI recommends. It's not about gaming an algorithm. It's about structuring your product information so that large language models understand what you sell, who it's for, and why it matters. When an AI is asked a question your product can answer, your product should be in that response.

The industry has invented a dozen acronyms for this — GEO, AEO, LLMO, and more. They're all describing different angles of the same thing: making your product visible to AI. We call it AIO — AI Optimization — because that's what it actually is. One term. One goal. No alphabet soup.

The bottom line: if your product isn't showing up in AI-generated answers, you're invisible to a growing segment of buyers who will never see a traditional search result page again.
